Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer—three simple steps anyone can learn to help someone who may be thinking about suicide.

Much like CPR prepares people to respond to a medical emergency, QPR equips everyday people to recognize the warning signs of suicide, start a compassionate conversation, and connect someone with appropriate support. No mental health background is required.

In just one session, participants learn how to:

  • Recognize common warning signs of suicide
  • Ask someone directly about suicide with confidence and compassion
  • Offer hope and encouragement
  • Connect someone with professional help and resources
Who Should Take QPR?

QPR is designed for anyone who wants to be prepared to help. Parents, educators, employers, healthcare professionals, faith leaders, first responders, community members, and friends can all serve as “gatekeepers”—people who are in a position to recognize when someone may be struggling and help connect them to support.

Why QPR Matters

Early recognition and intervention can make a meaningful difference. By learning to recognize warning signs and respond with confidence, you can help someone take the first step toward getting the help they need.
